Cherry Blossom engagement sessions are ubiquitous with the wedding scene here in the greater Washington DC area and whilst the Tidal Basin is the most iconic location to choose for a Cherry Blossom engagement session, there are actually a HUGE number of other locations that also have beautiful blooming cherry trees as well. In addition to the cherry trees, Washington DC and the entire northern Virginia are rife with other varieties of blooming trees. Many of my personal favorites actually bloom after the traditional Yoshino Cherry Trees found in the Tidal Basin.
While I am not out photographing Cherry Blossom engagement sessions this year due to the stay-at-home order currently in place here in Virginia, I do have time to spend blogging a few of my favorite past sessions, such as this one from 2018. Keep reading for future inspiration and a little escape from our current times.
Emily and Ethan have already had their engagement session published on both Hill City Bride and Alexandria Stylebook, but in case you didn’t catch the details there, you can check them out here.
Ethan proposed to Emily with this incredible custom East-West set Morganite engagement ring which was custom designed by local Old Town Alexandria jeweler, Alexandria & Co. Although Morganite can vary in color, this Morganite was a delightfully warm peach-y pink. The yellow gold of of the band enhanced the warmth of the color and added interest as an early departure from white gold.
I know the Tidal Basin is the location that gets all the buzz for cherry blossom engagement sessions, but there are many other alternate cherry blossom locations throughout DC, as well as northern Virginia. I’m personally a little partial to doing spring engagement sessions in Old Town Alexandria. The architecture in the area, as well as the additional variety of trees and flowers truly enhances each engagement session.
Dogwoods are among the other blooming spring trees in northern Virginia. The dogwoods here tend to bloom in a beautiful array of pinks and whites.
I love the way the light streams though the trees and and down onto the brick sidewalks adding to this spring engagement session.
Trees aren’t the only things in Old Town Alexandria that is pink. The front facade of Antheneum with it’s columns and weathered steps is one of Old Town Alexandria’s most iconic locations for engagement photos.
Having now missed the majority of my family and engagement sessions this spring season as we all wait, hope, and pray that the availability of resources to assist with the COVID-19 outbreak improves, I find myself feeling more creative than ever and looking forward to capturing so many incredible moments for couples and clients over the next months and years. See you all soon!

Hi I’m Erin and the artist behind Erin Tetterton Photography. Welcome to the photographic THE ARCHIVES.
I believe our lives are divine orchestrations. We each have a story and I believe they are stories that deserve to be told and told well. From Weddings, to Babies, and to celebrate the years we are just glad to have behind us. The photos I take are the images that tell the story. Your own history. Your family’s history. ….and the history of those generations that are to come.
My goal is to create authentic, timeless imagery that accurately depicts each phase of your life. Those phases will be different, unique, and beautiful. Inject humor! Do them in a place you love!
